Happy Earth Day

I would like to live a little greener. Who has some easy tips to get started?

Recycle, that ones pretty easy and can be fun for kids to help with. Buy organic food when you can afford it- especially meat and dairy. Use energy efficient light bulbs and turn things off and unplug them (things like tvs and computers use energy when just 'turned off') when not in use. Use more environment friendly cleaners. Line dry laundry.

That's all I can think of that's easy. If you really want to get into being green I'd say cloth diapers. Over the space of a couple years that saves a lot of waste from the landfill. I use homemade washable pads but I know that's more than most people want to do. :)

I just don't think I have it in me to do cloth diapers. I'll stick with the easy stuff for now. Thanks. How about cleaners? I want to make the vinegar spray. Is it just vinegar and water?

Yeah I just use equal parts water and vinegar. You get used to the smell really fast and it works great. You can also find 'recipes' online for homemade cleaning products of all kinds. I want to make a dusting solution for wood, I think it uses olive oil and something else.

You know, I heard a statistic (I forget exactly what it was)that I have no idea if it is credible or not, but it made me think. Cloth diapers may not be that much better because you have to think of the energy and water used to wash them, and the detergent containers take up land fill space too ( I know it's nothing compared to disposable diapers).

I like all Kirsten's ideas. Good stuff. Another thing I thought of it just to reuse stuff. I use shoe boxes to hold/ store little things, milk jugs for water storage, grocery bags for garbage can liners, stuff like that. I wish I were more creative, but it's a start.

I make my own laundry soap. It works good. I have used it for over a year now. If you want the recipe, I can give it to you.

Another easy one is to use reusable bags when grocery shopping. You can get all sorts of different kinds at reusablebags.com
