What's On Your Bookshelf?

I've really been enjoying Charles Martin's books lately. He's a christian writer so there isn't bad language or nasty talk. Really feel-good books. I'm finished with all his books and was wondering what you all are reading.

I always love to hear good book recommendations. I've been going through a "classics" phase. Also free of bad language. My favorite of all has been Jane Eyre. It is seriously a great romance. I LOVE it. Currently I am on book 5 of the Chronicles of Narnia. They are good. Definitely for the younger crowd, but so well written and I love the lines drawn to Christ. C.S. Lewis was a very religious man that (I think) really understood things. Another amazing book by him is Till We Have Faces. I think every woman should read that book. I plan on reading his other books. I've heard great things about The Screwtape Letters and Mere Christianity.

I'm reading The Witches by Roald Dahl. I've never read anything by him ever (not even The BFG), and I'm really enjoying his juxtaposition of old-fashioned innocence and lack of sugar-coating. It's charming.

I just finished reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. She's an incredible writer (aside from the so-subtle-they're-blatant anti-American sentiments typical of her generation). I remember someone on this group enjoyed the book Love In The Driest Season by Neely Tucker, and if you did, I think you'd like The Poisonwood Bible.

Last week, I read a short story called Chronopolis by J.G. Ballard and I'm still thinking about the questions the author raises, so it must have been a good little read. It's kinda sci-fi.

And speaking of sci-fi, a couple months ago I read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, which I had been avoiding all my life because I didn't think I'd be interested in it based on the premise, but it was SO good. It's easily one of my favorite books ever.

Thanks for the Jane Eyre recommendation. I'm going to put that on my Christmas list. It's silly that I've never read it before, because I'm big into the classics, too.

I sat in on a Young Adult fiction at Bucknell. Our last two books we read were the last Harry Potter and Notes from the Midnight Driver. The author of Notes came and spoke in our class and we could ask him anything we wanted to. It was really cool. I am going to read his book about a family that has a 5 year old kid who has cancer, it is called Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie. He has a great funny/sad thing going on that I love. I am also reading a bunch of knitting books and sewing books. THere is a really cool one my friend has that features patterns for retro style aprons. I am totally going to borrow it to make some. I am also making a skirt from a pattern books with skirts in it. I guess I am reading books that then involve making/doing something with what you have read.
