Teen Crafts

I might get to work in or be in charge of the craft shack up at Girl's Camp. I have fun ideas for people my age or older or for children, but realized that I don't know what to do for preteens and teenagers. Does anyone know of anything or any sites? My favorite crafts to do involve mostly knitting and scrapbooking, but I don't know if the teens will be interested in those things. Knitting is something you CAN learn to do in a week, but takes a lot of practice and the weather will be hot so maybe they won't want to do that. I would love some input on this. Thanks!

My favorite craft to do at girl's camp was making bead necklaces. But I think any jewelry making would be fun. Or tie-dyed things. I don't know of anything else off the top of my head but I'll keep thinking.

I agree with Kirsten. I loved making beaded necklaces, bracelets, and anklets. I could have done that for hours and hours. I also liked "friendship" bracelets. Kirsten, didn't we teach the tie-dying class? Candle and soap-making might also be fun, although, I don't know if candles are allowed at camp (open flame and all). I don't know if it's ever windy where you are, but making kites can be an interesting challenge. I have a book about how to make beautiful paper that looks easy enough and fun. Or just taking beautiful existing paper and binding it into a blank book. You could make those greeting cards with stamps and scraps of paper like the ones posted a couple weeks ago. You could have kits prepared to sew purses out of things like denim pockets or duct tape. http://www.ducttapecreations.com/ Kids these days make all sorts of cool things out of duct tape, like wallets, jewelery, and prom dresses. I've seriously seen a dress made of duct tape and it looked amazing. I love buttons. Anything I can sew buttons on, I do. Like backpacks, hats, Christmas stockings, clothing, oven mitts, and whatever. Kirsten and I made these voodoo-type dolls that we thought were fun. We just cut out doubled fabric in the shape of a doll, sewed it together, turned it inside out (or not), stuffed it with batting, and sewed yarn to the head for hair. They were really ugly in a cool way. I think we used them to ward off yucky boys, or something pagan like that. I was never really into gluing pieces of wood together and painting it, but we had a lot of that kind of stuff at girls camp. I think I would have liked to learn how to knit at girls camp.

I know that they (our stake, I think) have made little autograph type books. It was some sort of scrapbooking, accordion (not exactly) folded thing that they made and it all folded out into one long book. They had girls sign it and write things. I think a ward in our stake made some type of treasure boxes, too. You could always take a poll from the girls (in your ward) and find out what kinds of things they like to do.

I think making thank-you or birthday cards would be great. Jewelry too! If knitting is too involved, you could teach them how to crochet the little edges on burp clothes.

The burp cloth edges is a good idea! I used to have a TON of them, but I donated them to the Young Women in MY ward, and they learned to crochet the edges.

I think making jewelry would be fun. Also, what about painting? I love to paint and you can do it for pretty cheap.

All great ideas! Steph, what kind of painting?

Kendall and I painted terra cotta pots yesterday, those are way cheap. For FHE we planted some seeds and bulbs and repotted our tiny christmas trees. (Like 1 inch tall tiny.) It was really fun. All of that is cheap, the pots- seeds- soil.

I'm not sure if you have to provide all the materials but the girls could always paint an abstract on a 4x6 (or whatever size you choose) canvas. They have them really cheap at Michaels and JoAnnes. I think the thin ones are even cheaper and may come in packs of 2-4. You could always have them paint one already done too (have like 2-3 samples from them to choose from). Also, I think natural scenery would be pretty easy. You'll just have to search the web and fine painting or pics that aren't too complicated.

I have recently painted terra cotta pots with Sevrie. I used her handprint to make a butterfly. I painted her hand 3 different colors and added glitter tp the middle color. It turned out really really cute. You'll have to let me kow if you decide to do this and I go al ittle more in detail. Like Kirst said, these can be really cheap and you can do whatever size you like.

Man I wish I was eligible for this!

You can enter a contest to make prom evening wear out of duct tape for you and a date and win a scholarship!

Is it all duct tape?

The prom dress I saw (and the boy's suit) were covered with duct tape, but not really made of duct tape. I think they bought some retro clothes from a thrift store and covered them. But you'd never know. It looked SO cool. They entered this contest, but they didn't win. The winners on that website blow my socks off. Amazing!

I like the idea of painting pots. I painted a pot once with bright colors and flowers over it, then I sanded it to make it look kinda shabby and it ended up looking like a cool Mexican pot. What I liked about it was I didn't have to be a skilled painter, but it still looked great because it had style.
