Reverently, Quietly...

How can I keep my energetic kids happy (and quiet) during Sacrament meeting? Is there a magic toy that I have not discovered? There has to be something that will hold their interest for an hour and is appropriate to bring to church. Any suggestions?

Seriously though, I've recently found that the more selection I have of things for them to do, the worse they are. I finally said no toys, no snacks. I have been taking only coloring books and crayons and since that is all there is for them to do, they do it! It's been great. However, I think that it might be wearing off. I'll report back after another sacrament meeting or two and give you an update. But we've been doing that for a couple months now.

Hey that's funny. We finally did the same thing as Alysia-- no snacks, just coloring books. And they have been much better. Getting over their initial "shock" at not having a snack at their disposal during sacrament can be a hurdle though- but once your past it it's really nice to not have to deal with the mess. My husband is the one who finally broke me of that crutch- and now they don't even ask.

A few things that have worked for me in the past are a quiet book that my mom made for us as kids. Its really a fun one and teaches gospel principles.

Then there are sticker/coloring books- or you can print off new pictures from the internet to mix it up.

And my daughter right now LOVES little magnet dress up dolls and those are pretty quiet.

I'll make a post of something I saw on my sis-in-laws blog that looked pretty cute. I am sure some supermommy could whip it up in flash.

A, E and I have recently been able to stay in sacrament meeting the whole time. (OK, Ian usually needs one trip to the bathroom, but the other two stay in.)

On Sunday morning we tell them each to choose a few quiet toys to bring to church.

Occasionally we bring snacks, but they can only have them if they are quiet during the actual passing of the sacrament.

Also, we separate them so that they can't play together. Our seating arrangement in one of the small pews against the wall goes like this A-C-I-T-E with Collin and I separating the kids.

My kids also like to bring string or yarn and a couple small figures and can play the entire time tying the figures up or dangling them from the string or making traps.

I just remembered that the kids loved using a glue stick to paste pictures we had cut out of magazines the week before or also using collage pictures and attaching them to the back of the pew in front of you with blue-tack, plastitak. They loved that.
